Caption: Mineral terrace. Mineral terrace at Dolina Geyzerov in Kamchatka, Russia. The terrace has formed at the outflow of a geothermal spring. The water, heated under pressure deep underground, dissolves large amounts of minerals from the surrounding rocks and then deposits them at the surface as it cools. Some of the deposits are coated in heat-loving (thermophilic) micro- organisms.
