Caption: Mineral terrace. Mineral terrace at Geyser Hill in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. The terrace has formed at the outflow of a geothermal spring. The water, heated under pressure deep underground, dissolves large amounts of minerals from the surrounding rocks and then deposits them at the surface as it cools. The deposits are coated in heat-loving (thermophilic) micro- organisms (green).
