Caption: Limestone cave. Underground cave carved out of limestone rock by a river. The walls of the cave are covered in carbonate rock formations deposited from solution by rainwater filtering through the surrounding rocks. This is the Grotte de l'Orbe, formed by the Orbe River, in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland. The river is an underground outlet of Lake Joux. The underground passage widens into these caves just before the river emerges above ground near the town of Orbe. The course of the river was first explored by cave divers in the 1960s.
