Caption: Stalactites. Water flowing down stalactites (top) in a cave. Stalactites are formed when calcium carbonate precipitates from water droplets as they descend from the roof of the cave. Beneath the stalactites, water has run down the rock surface forming layered deposits of calcium carbonate (bottom). The formation of stalactites is known as concretion.
