Caption: Lake Nasser & the Aswan Dam, seen from the space shuttle. The Aswan Dam is the barrier near the top of the picture & separates the lighter waters of the lake from the dark blue of the River Nile. The fluctuating water level of the lake is an environmental index of drought in north-central Africa. The lake level in this photo has decreased compared to 1981, as is shown by the exposed areas of lakebed, notably in the lower left corner of the picture. The photograph was taken from the space shuttle Discovery during the STS-26 mission in September- October 1988.
