Caption: Shuttle picture of Lake Chad (central grey area). North is at top. The fluctuating water level of the lake is an environmental index of drought in north-central Africa. The lake level is decreasing, as is shown by the sand dunes north of the lake, which were previously submerged. Some of the dunes still trap a little water. Of all the world's inland bodies of water Lake Chad is perhaps the most frequently-photographed subject for cameras in orbit, hence the reduction in its size, which has occurred over the past two decades, is well documented. The clouds in the area are not of the type which produce rain.
