Caption: Catete reservoir. Infrared satellite image of the hydroelectric dam (at centre left) and reservoir at Catete, Angola. North is at top. In the infrared range water appears black, green vegetation is in shades of red and bare ground is blue/green. Hydroelectric power causes little pollution but disrupts the local environment because of the flooding caused by the formation of the lake behind the dam. Angola has numerous rivers and generates 75% of its energy needs through hydroelectric schemes. Image taken by the French SPOT-1 satellite in June during Angola's wet season.
