Caption: Darbandikhan reservoir. Infrared satellite image of the reservoir of the Darbandikhan dam near Halabja in a Kurdish area of northeast Iraq. North is at top. Cultivated crops appear bright red and forested areas are red/brown. Urban areas, such as Halabja (centre right) are light blue/grey. Bare ground appears in shades of brown and grey, depending on the nature of the surface. Water appears black. The dam (lower left) stands on the Diyala (Sirwan) river. Halabja, a city of about 70,000 people, was bombed with chemical weapons on 17 March 1988 during Iraq's civil war. Image taken by the French SPOT-1 satellite in August.
