Caption: Lake Taupo. Infrared satellite image of Lake Taupo on North Island, New Zealand, partially obscured by cloud. North is at top. Urban areas are pale blue, with vegetation red and green, and water black. This is the largest lake in New Zealand, measuring 27km by about 40km. It was formed in 186 AD by a volcanic explosion so massive it was heard in China. The data for this image were collected by the French SPOT 4 satellite on 17 March 2000.
