Caption: Desert lakes, Brazil, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). Freshwater lakes (blue) have formed in an area of coastal sand dunes (white). This is the Lencois Marahenses National Park. The coast (across bottom) is part of Brazil's northern coast, and is 700 kilometres east of the mouths of the Amazon River. North is to lower right. Winds blow off the Atlantic Ocean and drive white sand inland to form this pattern of dunes. Only part of the 100-kilometre-wide area is shown. In the rainy season, the lakes fill and reshape the landscape, reviving wildlife that lies dormant during the dry season. The ISS orbits some 380 kilometres above the Earth. Photographed on 21 September 2003.
