Caption: Itaipu reservoir. Satellite image of flooded river valleys on the edge of Lake Itaipu, Brazil. Water is blue, and vegetation is red and green. Lake Itaipu was created in 1982 when the River Parana was dammed for hydroelectric power generation. Lake Itaipu is located on the border of Brazil and Paraguay and is close to the border of Argentina. The lake is surrounded by intensive agriculture. The data for this 10-metre-resolution image was obtained by the Spot-4 Earth observation satellite on 20 October 2000. This image covers an area approximately 14.5 kilometres across.
