Caption: Dry swamp. View of the "knees" of swamp cypress trees (Taxodium distichum) in a dry swamp on a river floodplain. The knees, projections from the trees's trunk, are aerial roots. They provide the tree with oxygen in the wet asphyxiated soil in which it grows. Cypress trees are evergreen trees with resinous wood to prevent them from rotting in water. The base of the trunk is broadened to help the tree get enough support in the soft earth of the swamp. A swamp is an area of land which is almost always flooded with shallow water. Photographed near the Roanoke River in North Carolina, USA.
