Caption: Tundra pond. Tundra is the flat, treeless Arctic region that lies between the polar regions of perpetual snow and ice and the northern limit of tree growth. In the brief, warm summer weather, the surface layer of the permafrost (frozen subsoil) thaws. The surface snows melt, forming freshwater marshes and ponds in the badly-drained soils. These become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, midges and other insects. They are also an important habitat for birds and aquatic wildlife and vegetation. Photographed on Clavering Island, North East Greenland National Park, Greenland. The mainland mountains of Greenland are seen in the background.
