Caption: Fenn's Moss. Cotton grass (Eriophorum virginicum) plants growing in Fenn's Moss nature reserve. The area comprises lowland raised bog. Depressions, caused by glaciation in the last ice age, gradually filled up, progressing from swamp to raised mire. As the hollows filled in, the gradual build up of peat raised the isolated surface of the mire from the influence of both surface run- off and groundwater. Rain-fed (ombrogenous) peat then began to form. Photographed in Wrexham, Wales.
