Caption: Mangrove aerial roots. Mangroves have evolved a number of physiological and morphological traits that enable them to grow in salty, saturated soils. Aerial roots and pneumatophores allow the plant to recieve enough carbon dioxide, whilst excess salt taken up from the water is depositied in leaves which are then dropped. Following the South-East Asian tsunami in December 2004, the importance of mangrove swamps as coastal buffers has been highlighted.
