Caption: Soda beds. Aerial photograph of the soda beds (white) at Lake Natron. This lake is highly alkaline, containing soda (sodium carbonate), salt and magnesite (magnesium carbonate) deposits from local volcanoes. The drying soda forms beds around the lake as the water is evaporated by the sun. Lake Natron is 56 kilometres long and 24 kilometres wide. It is in northern Tanzania on the border with Kenya.
