Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Ancient salt pans, Marsascala, Malta. These pans are dug out of the soft coastal limestone rock and divided up by small walls. The man is repairing damage to the walls. Sea water is pumped into the hollows and left to evaporate in the Sun's heat. The salt deposits are collected and used to flavour food. The pans have been in use for at least several thousand years.
