Caption: Sand dunes. Sand dunes are produced by the effect of prevailing winds upon large expanses of fine sand. The crescent shape of the dune in the foreground is fairly typical; the prevailing wind here would be blowing from left to right. The complex pattern of airflow over the dune may be gauged from the pattern of ripples on the dune's surface. Photographed near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
