Caption: Desert coast of Somalia, seen from space. View of the north-eastern coast of Somalia, looking roughly eastward over the Indian Ocean. At bottom left is the small peninsula of Raas Xaafuun, the most easterly point on the African continent. At bottom right is the pale-coloured valley of the seasonal River Nugaal. The absence of clouds over most of the coast indicates a strong off-shore prevailing wind, one reason why rainfall is so rare in the area. This image was taken by the crew of Shuttle Endeavour during Mission STS-54 of 13-19 January 1993.
