Caption: Rub al Khali desert. SPOT satellite view of part of the Rub al Khali, the extensive erg desert in southern Saudi Arabia. Erg is an Arabic name for such a region, a wide-ranging field of large sand dunes. The dunes here exist at two scales. The large, straight seif dunes are semi-permanent features aligned parallel to the prevailing wind. The surfaces of these show large numbers of smaller crescent-shaped barchan dunes. The development of an erg desert depends on a plentiful supply of sand, a fairly constant prevailing wind and a lack of vegetation. SPOT is a French Earth observation satellite.
