Caption: Changes to the Sahara Desert. Two maps showing the change in extent of the Sahara Desert between 1984 and 1991. The colours represent vegetation cover according to the scale at centre. The desert is shown in orange. Note that the southern border of the desert is further north in 1991 than in 1984; the area of the desert has declined by 695,000 square kilometres, or about 7%. Note also that the vegetation cover in the tropical zone is less dense in 1991 (pink) than in 1984 (white). These data suggest more widespread mild conditions in the southern boundary zone in 1991. The southern boundary of the desert fluctuates on a timescale of several years.
