Caption: Atacama Desert. SPOT satellite image showing part of the Atacama Desert in Chile, South America. North is towards the top. This part of the desert, close to the Andes Mountains, is made of volcanic soils, which here appear brown. Two snow-capped volcanoes are just right of centre. The white areas in the upper right are salt pans formed from minerals leached from the volcanic soils by rain and deposited by streams. The region has almost no vegetation, except around some of the streams (upper centre, for example). Vegetation appears red due to infrared processing. Image taken by one of the French SPOT satellites.
