Caption: Atacama desert. Boulders strewn across a plain in the Atacama desert of northern Chile. This is one of the driest regions on Earth. It is a coastal desert, caused by the cold offshore Humboldt current of the Pacific Ocean. This causes water vapour in the region to condense and fall as rain over the ocean, rather than the land.
