Caption: Coastal desert, Yemen, infrared satellite image. North is at top. The desert land (brown) is eroded by many dry channels that fill with water when it rains. Much of Yemen is mountainous, with lowlands along the coast. Cape Fartak (far right) juts out into the waters (black) of the Arabian Sea. This 180-kilometre-wide image was taken on 5 January 1973, in visible and infrared wavelengths, with the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) sensor on NASA's Landsat 1 satellite.
