Caption: Badlands, USA. Kirtland Shale is one of two major geological formations found in the badlands, or Bisti Wilderness, New Mexico. The shale caps mushroom- shaped forms of eroded rock. The red shale (right) occurs when the shale is exposed to high temperatures. This 16 million square metres Navajo Indian Reservation was established in 1984. Bisti is a Navajo word meaining 'badlands'. Around 70 million years ago, the region was lush with vegetation and inhabited by reptiles and primitive mammals. Evidence of their existence is found in the form of fossils and the site is of great interest to researchers.
