Caption: Erg Iguidi desert, Algeria, satellite image. North is at top. These sand dunes form Erg Iguidi, a sand desert in the Sahara between Algeria and Mauritania. Erg is a term for a sand desert. The lines of sand dunes (yellow) are 250 metres wide, and are formed by the prevailing winds. At lower left, the dunes are on a sand plain. At centre and upper left they are lying on top of black sandstone rock. The light blue and white areas are chalky deposits and salt crusts left behind after the water in the area evaporated. Image data obtained on 29 March 1987.
