Caption: Iodine. Polarised light micrograph of a crystal of iodine. Iodine is one of the halogen group of elements (Group VII). It has a dark black, shiny appearance as a solid, and easily gives off a violet vapour of iodine gas. Iodine is an essential trace element, being required for the production of the hormone thyroxine. Iodine is also used in the manufacture of medicines, disinfectants, photographic products and in quartz-halogen lights. Magnification x50 at 6x7cm size.
