Caption: Deforestation seen from space. The light-coloured rectangular areas in the picture are areas of rainforest in Brazil's Rio Sao Francisco basin which have been commercially logged. Peliminary NASA estimates in 1988 suggest a 25-30% increase in land-clearing in the region since 1984, with unknown environmental & ecological consequences. The photograph was taken from the space shuttle Discovery during the STS-26 mission in September- October 1988.
