Caption: Landsat image of the rain forests surrounding the Rondonia Development Project in western Brazil. The image, recorded in September 1981, shows ext- ensive deforestation associated with farm settle- ments spreading from a central road (running left to right). Deforested areas appear blue/white, dense vegetation is red. The road was built in the 1970s in preparation for "slash & burn" farmers whom the government relocated at Rondonia due to severe poverty in other parts of Brazil. Nutrients released by burning cleared wood are quickly exhausted, forcing farmers to repeat the process elsewhere. (Compare with E640/021 5 years before).
