Caption: False-colour infrared image of part of the Rio San Francisco Basin, Brazil. This image was taken by the crew of Shuttle Discovery during Mission STS- 31 of 24-29 April 1990. The extensive deep red areas are forested, whilst pale pink areas are arable fields. This shows the extent of deforestation in the basin, once almost all of the frame would have been covered in rain forest. The pale circular features just above centre are pivot irrigation schemes. This is a frequently- photographed area by US astronauts in orbit, and has allowed a thorough study of patterns of deforestation.
