Caption: Deforestation in Brazil. Landsat satellite image of part of the Amazon Basin in Brazil showing extensive deforestation. This image gives a clear impression of the destruction of the tropical rain forest: the dark green of the natural forest contrasts the pale greens and browns of levelled forest. The linear, branching pattern to the loss of the forest at lower right is typical of the region. Loss of the rain forest in South America is one of the major environmental concerns. Its role as a carbon dioxide sink and moderator of climate is under threat, as is its position as home for thousands of unique species of animals, plants and insects.
