Caption: Deforestation. SPOT-1 satellite view of part of the rain forest of northern Brazil near Aldeia Velha. The image clearly shows areas where the indigenous rain forest (emerald green) has been cut away and the land planted with crops (yellow- green and brown). Note how the land has been cleared in packets of about 1 square kilometre each. Loss of the rain forests is cause for much concern: not only do the forests account for much of the Earth's oxygen production and absorption of carbon dioxide, they are also home to countless diverse species of plants, insects and animals.
