Caption: Deforestation fire. View of a fire started deliberately to prevent forest regrowth on deforested land in Ecuador. The deforested land is turned into grassland for grazing cattle. The systematic clearing of trees and vegetation from the rainforests has raised concern that countless plant and animal species could be made extinct. There are also worries that the lack of oxygen- producing vegetation in this area could contribute to global warming, due to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The rainforests are under threat from urbanisation, the oil industry and hard wood logging as well as cattle farming.
