Caption: Deforestation. Aerial photograph of a cleared forest (across top) surrounding a canyon in Madagascar. Forest clearing is often as a result of commercial logging or to make land available for agriculture. Forest land usually has only a shallow layer of fertile soil, and after a few years of intense farming the land can no longer support commercial crops. Deforestation may lead to soil erosion, which can encroach on neighbouring forested land or result in landslides following heavy rain that wash away forested areas.
