Caption: Slash and burn agriculture. This method of farming involves felling trees and other vegetation, then burning it on the cleared land. The ash produced fertilises the land in the short term. However, in many habitats, such as rainforest, nutrients are lost and after a few years, the land cannot be farmed or regenerated to its former state. Slash and burn can cause air pollution which damages surrounding areas. It can harm animal species through loss of habitat, especially when fires burn out of control. Photographed in Madagascar.
