This image is part of the feature Agriculture from space

Caption: Deforestation. Satellite image of rainforest (green, top) in Brazil and agricultural land (brown/green, bottom) in Argentina, separated by the Iguacu River (grey). The South American rainforest has suffered extensive deforestation to make way for agriculture. Much of the land is being converted into cattle pasture. Such deforestation leads to soil erosion and nutrient loss. The data for this 5-metre-resolution image was obtained by the Spot-5 Earth observation satellite on 26 September 2002. This image covers an area approximately 3 kilometres across.
