Caption: Sandveld forest. Sandveld is a rare type of forest found in southern Africa. It is mostly flat, with a few low sand ridges. The sandy soil contains few nutrients and has a low retaining capacity for water. Sandveld is characterised by a high density of trees with sparse ground cover. It contains a unique combination of often endemic plant and animal species. Photographed in Mkhuzi, South Africa.
