Caption: Deforestation, Brazil. Satellite image of smoke plumes (pale blue, lower frame) rising over Brazil, South America. North is at bottom. The east coast is seen running from bottom left to top right and the Atlantic ocean is at upper left. The smoke plumes are a result of fires, lit deliberately to clear forest so it can be used for crops and cattle ranching. This procedure is known as "slash and burn" deforestation. Peak burning periods occur during the dry season of June to September. The natural barrier of the Andes mountains prevents the smoke reaching the altiplano of southern Peru and Bolivia.
