Caption: Typical coastal tundra vegetation. Tundra vegetation is essentially treeless, and is found in areas north of the taiga (pine-type forest) regions of N.America, Europe and Asia. It is dominated by lichen and grass, as seen here, but may also contain mosses, dwarf shrubs and herbaceous perennial plants. Tundra soils are often underlain by seasonal permafrost, and have a short growing period in the polar spring and summer. Photographed on the island of Fugloya, Svalbard.
