Caption: Tundra mountain. Ailigas mountain in the tundra of Finnish Lapland. Tundra is the treeless Arctic region between the northern limit of tree growth and the regions of perpetual snow and ice. It is characterised by hard rocky ground and low shrubs and vegetation. The subsoil remains permanently frozen throughout the year (permafrost), with the top layer of soil thawing in the brief summer. Ailigas was a sacred male mountain to the Suomi people of Lapland. Their holy man would pray here for good hunting. Photographed near Karigasniemi.
