Caption: Kondyor Massif crater, Russia. Satellite image of the Kondyor Massif crater (lower centre) near Yakutsk in Siberia, Russia. This six kilometre wide ring was formed by the intrusion of igneous, or volcanic, rock that pushed up through overlying layers of sedimentary rock. It is mined for its rich deposits of platinum and other minderals. This image was taken by a hand- held 7mm camera from the space shuttle Discovery's aft flight deck in May 1991.
