Caption: Barringer Crater, Arizona, USA. This crater (black circle, centre left) is also known as Meteor Crater and was formed over 50,000 years ago by the impact of an iron meteorite colliding with the Earth. The meteorite is thought to have weighed more than 10,000 tonnes. The resulting crater is 174 metres deep and has a diameter of 1300 metres. Satellite image taken by a NASA Space Shuttle.
