Caption: The Hawaiian island chain as seen from the space shuttle. North is at bottom. From bottom right, the islands are: Niihau, Kauai, Ouahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Kahoolawe, & Hawaii. The islands perturb the prevailing north-easterly winds to produce extensive cloud wakes in the lee of the islands. The photograph was taken from the space shuttle Discovery during the STS-26 mission in September-October 1988.
