Caption: The Falkland Islands, photographed by the crew of Shuttle Discovery during the STS-48 mission of 12- 18 September 1991. North is oriented toward the top left. The Falkland Islands are a British Dependent Territory in the South Atlantic, 650km from the coast of Argentina. There are two main islands, East (right) and West Falkland, seperated by the Falkland Sound. The spit of land that joins the north and south parts of East Falkland is the location of Darwin and Goose Green settlements. The point furthest right in the frame is the location of the capital, Stanley. A sovereignty dispute led to the islands being invaded by Argentina in 1982, later ejected by the British.
