Photographed in the infrared colour range, thickly vegetated regions appear red. The island is mountainous at its centre. At left of this Cordillera Central terraine is Haiti, with much of the lowlands deforested (light blue). The capital Port-au-Prince is to the south on the wide western bay of Haiti. Dominican Republic occupies the larger forested eastern region of the island, with the capital Santo Domingo on the south coast (light blue). Satellite image taken in August.
