Caption: Fogo island. Infrared satellite image of Fogo in the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. North is at top. In the infrared range bare ground appears dark grey, water is blue, green vegetation is red and clouds are white. Fogo, like the other Cape Verde Islands, is volcanic in origin. The island's peak, Pico di Cano, is the highest in the Cape Verde Islands at 2829 metres. There are 10 islands and five islets in the Cape Verde Islands, of which Fogo is one of the most southern. The islands are largely arid. Image taken by a French SPOT satellite in May, during the dry season.
