Caption: Mafia Island. Infrared satellite image of Mafia Island, Tanzania, which lies in the Indian Ocean. North is at top. In the infrared range green vegetation appears red, water is blue/black, bare ground and sand banks are cream and cloud is white. The two islands at lower right are Juani (larger) and Jibondo. A line of light blue along the three islands' eastern coasts show where waves are breaking on coral reefs. Mafia's airport is just to the lower left of centre. These low-lying islands have a tropical climate which is kept pleasant by steady sea breezes. Image taken by the French SPOT-3 satellite in June.
