Caption: Malta. Infrared satellite image of Malta, an independent Republic of 5 islands lying in the Mediterranean Sea. North is at top. The largest islands are Malta to the east and Gozo to the west. Between them lie Comino and the smaller Cominotto to the west. The tiny Filfla is south of Malta. In this infrared image the sea is dark blue, vegetation is red, sandy areas are yellow and areas of bare ground are shades of green/grey. Urban areas, such as the capital Valletta on the north-east of Malta, are light blue. Image taken with a French SPOT satellite in May. The smallest visible image is 20 metres across.
