It lies in the Aegean Sea, south-east of mainland Greece, and is the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. There are three mountain ranges on Crete: the Lefka Ori (brown with white clouds, centre left), the Idi Range (brown, centre) and the Dikte Range (brown, centre right). Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilisation from 3000-1100 BC.
