Caption: Wake Island, Pacific Ocean, Ikonos satellite image. North is at top. Wake is an atoll comprising three islands. To the east is the largest, Wake Island, to the west is Wilkes Island and to the north lies Peale Island. They form the crater rim of an underwater volcano, with the lagoon between them lying in its crater. The atoll is administered by the United States Air Force, which has a base and airstrip (visible lower right) on Wake Island. This was constructed during the Pacific campaign of World War II. Photographed on 8 November 2001.
